Bizarre Bristol City and Bristol Rovers vandalism at UNESCO World Heritage site

The team in charge of protecting one of the West Country’s most famous UNESCO World Heritage Sites have been left fuming after someone carved the names of both Bristol’s football teams onto the rocks.

The bizarre bit of vandalism was spotted yesterday at Lulworth Cove in Dorset, and is a little baffling.

The words ‘Bristol City’ have been carved into one rock at the foot of the cliff in the cove, while the words ‘The Gas, Bristol Rovers’ have been carved into another.

Which came first, whether they were done together or even by the same person who somehow perhaps supports both teams is a bit of a mystery.

Lulworth Cove and nearby Durdle Door were designated UNESCO World Heritage Sites in 2001 because of their unique geology and their place at the start of humankind’s scientific understanding of fossils and rock formations.

It’s a privately-owned estate but a quarter of a million people climb the hill between the two, or visit the cove.

The images of the damage, which is understood to have happened over the weekend, were posted on social media by the Lulworth Rangers team which manages and conserves the area.

They moved swiftly to remove the vandalised rocks, promising to sort out the issue by Tuesday evening.

“Would anyone like to let Bristol City and Bristol Rovers (are they the same?) that their fans were here?” the Lulworth Rangers asked on social media. “(It’s) soon to be removed you'll be glad to hear.”
