'Bit special' - Nottingham Forest fans go nuts as James Garner seals crucial victory

Nottingham Forest fans have been celebrating an important win for their side as Cardiff City were beaten 1-0.

Chris Hughton’s Reds returned to action after the international break and took a big step towards securing safety as they toppled the play-off-chasing Bluebirds.

Manchester United loanee James Garner’s excellent first half strike proved to be the difference between the two sides, on a day when the visitors had to battle hard.

It ended a run of six games without a victory for Forest as they made the trip back with three points.

Here’s what supporters have had to say on social media...

GARIBALDI RED: Guy Moussi on why he loves Nottingham Forest

@xtremelionheart: Nice 1-0 win. 10 points clear of bottom 3. But most importantly of all, still above Derby #NFFC

@AlanMacleod14: That feels like a massive result! Well played lads

@trickytree52: That win really does lift the pressure. Surely now we can just go out there express ourselves and see where it takes us for the rest of the season. Only really a win and a draw away from safety and they will come #nffc

@Hatwell88: Excellent result today #nffc , that @jgarnerr96 is a bit special aint he

@forestfanzone: Such a satisfying win. We’ve been deprived of that McKenna and Worrall partnership this season - they are absolutely phenomenal together - two of the best defenders in the league #nffc

@JamesSh23888249: Some win that. Typical Championship game that far too often we have been on the wrong side of at full time. Well done lads #nffc

@Jonno3112: Just went to the fridge and Scott McKenna blocked me from opening it. Was everywhere that lad today #nffc

@JfAllan98: Huge W. Great away performance, surely we’re safe now

Garner struck in the first half when he converted a fine cross from Cyrus Christie which followed some patient build-up play by the Reds.

It was no more than Forest deserved for a disciplined performance against Mick McCarthy’s men who found the visiting back four in commanding form.

The only chance Cardiff mustered of note came early on when Leandro Bacuna forced a save from Brice Samba after he was picked out by the dangerous Harry Wilson.

But it was Forest who eventually found the breakthrough when Christie got to the byline, and spotted the unmarked Garner, who swept home a first-time finish.

Cardiff’s response was a shot from Will Vaulks which whistled past Samba’s upright as the Reds comfortably held onto their lead heading into the interval.

The Bluebirds ramped up the pressure after the break, but could not find a way through a rearguard in which Joe Worrall, who returned from a rib injury, and Scott McKenna were sensational.

A brilliant block by the latter stopped a shot from Kieffer Moore from troubling Samba as Cardiff toiled away but were given little change.

But they almost grabbed an equaliser when Aden Flint was left unmarked but he planted his header over the bar from seven yards out.

However, that was the nearest they came as Forest held on to secure a valuable three points.
