Bissouma signs as Edouard replaces Lacazette - The signings Arsenal should make this summer

Arsenal may still have two games left to play this season but the club's focus is firmly on the summer transfer window.

After being eliminated from the Europa League at the semi final stage by Unai Emery's Villarreal it appears that the Gunners will not be playing European football for the first time in a quarter of a century next season.

As a result Mikel Arteta is planning a massive overhaul of his squad an has already promised to be ruthless as he looks to take his side into the next phase of his project at the Emirates.

"I think a project has its phases and I am telling you we are in a much better position today to be where we want to be very soon, if we do what we have to do." he told press last month.

“But we have to be ruthless. We cannot be crying and stuck on what we don’t have. We have to see what we do have and maximise it to get what we want."

However, as Arsenal embark on one of the most important summers in their recent history the ongoing financial impacts of COVID-19 and the likely lack of continental competition means their budget is set to be highly restricted.

With that in mind football.london 's Gunners reporters Kaya Kaynak and Chris Wheatley have decided to help Arteta and Edu out by picking a realistic signing that they would make if they were in charge at the Emirates this summer.

Kaya Kaynak, Arsenal writer -

There's been a lot of debate over where the most important position for Arsenal to strengthen is this summer but for me it has to be in central midfield.

Mikel Arteta's side don't control games nearly as much as they should and playing out from the back has been a real issue.

For me the primary focus has got to be signing a more defensive minded midfielder to sit alongside Thomas Partey in the middle of the park so as to allow the Ghanaian's box-to-box abilities to truly flourish.

I've been a real fan of Granit Xhaka this season and his performances have won me over for sure, but I still think a little more mobility in the middle of the park wouldn't go a miss.

It's for this reason that I think Yves Bissouma has got to be near the top of the Gunners shopping list next window.

The Mali international has really stood out at Brighton this year and is excellent in the tackle ranking in the 93rd percentile for tackles made among midfielder in Europe's top five leagues as per fbRef and is up in the 84th for interceptions.

His pass completion might not be as strong as someone like Xhaka, but I think he could really compliment Partey will in the middle of the park.

Price-wise Brighton reportedly want around £40 million for him which will be tough given Arsenal's budgetary constraints this summer. But if Stan and Josh Kroenke want to back up their promises to invest in the club, then securing a deal for the 24-year-old would be a good place to start.

There can be no doubt over the positions in which Arsenal need to strengthen this summer.

Some will take priority more than others, while certain departures are likely to depend on who the club are able to bring in.

Alexandre Lacazette's future remains up in the air and with a year left on his contract it could be argued that selling him makes a whole lot of sense.

The Frenchman is an experienced striker and should only be allowed to leave if an adequate replacement is brought in, which is where a certain 23-year-old has been heavily linked.

Odsonne Edouard has 18 goals and four assists to his name in the Scottish Premiership this season.

Indeed, Arsenal have the likes of Folarin Balogun waiting in the wings but it should be noted that Edouard looks a ready-made player who can fill the void of someone like Lacazette with ease.

A price tag of £20million has been mooted for the former PSG academy starlet, and it's a fee which the Gunners should be able to stump up if they cash in on their senior frontman this summer.
