Bishopton Rugby Club set to host first senior rugby tournament in memory of former player Matthew Seymour

Bishopton Rugby Club are inviting Renfrewshire rugby fans and families to scrum on down and support the club’s first-ever senior rugby tournament.

Hosted at Holmpark this Saturday, eight men’s teams will battle it out to take home the inaugural Bishopton Sevens title.

As well as the men’s matches, four women’s teams will also challenge on the field in the 10s edition of the game.

The exciting event will also serve as a fundraiser for the club, with the tournament hosted in memory of former club player Matthew Seymour.

Matthew tragically passed away in 2014 through an undiagnosed cardiac condition at the age of just 21.

All funds raised will help improve drainage and floodlighting at the ground, as well as upgrade the changing facilities at Holmpark.

A Bishopton club spokesperson explained: “In the last year, Bishopton have put a great deal into upgrading the facilities within the local community, with significant upgrades to the changing facilities available within the sports and social club that were very much outdated.

“The aim of the tournament will be to help increase awareness of Rugby Union in the Renfrewshire area with its first of its kind annually running Rugby Sevens and 10s tournament.

“All donations received on the day will go to helping to improve the community pitches, with drainage and floodlights being the next big steps in making the Holmpark pitches available 12 months of the year for training and games.

“There will be many local businesses involved on the day, providing food and beverages and showing what Bishopton has to offer. Ingliston Country Club have provided overall sponsorship of the event and have also supported the organising committee in the planning of the day.

“There will also be a range of fun-filled activities for kids of all ages. There will be an inflatable assault course, kicking challenges, obstacle course, glitter tattoos and face painting on the say.

“So, while the adults enjoy the rugby, the kids can have a blast, too!”

Among the providers on the day are Sharon’s Snacks, Woody’s BBQ and the Bishy Beer Tent. There will also be live music from AC Blackhead in the evening, with the rock back playing in the Bishopton Sports and Social Club from 7pm.

The club spokesperson added: “The first kick-off time will be at 10.30am. Be sure to get yourself along early and get at good spot to set you up for the day.”
