She told Glasgow Live: "The Boys Brigade thing started 54 years ago when the captain asked me if I would play the piano for the boys and it would only be for three weeks.

"However, the person that was supposed to takeover never appeared, so I kept doing it. I did it every wednesday night and it was rewarding because you so the boys progressing.

"I wouldn't change it for anything.

"I never thought I'd eventually be on the New Years Honours list."

The British Empire Medal (BEM) came as a surprise to Joyce and she didn't know how to react when her daughter Lynn revealed the good news.

The lollipop lady said: "It was my daughter who got the ball rolling apparently and it has been going on for two years.

"My mind over the last couple of days has been a blank.

"My daughter told me what was going to happen.

"I had to sit down, I couldn't take it in, I really couldn't take it in."

Joyce has been a crossing patroller for 23 years and is deemed a vital part of the community.

She goes above and beyond to help others, at lunch break she assists the classroom assistants by supervising the children in the playground. This work is all unpaid but essential in these times of shrinking budgets.

The safety of the children is of paramount importance and and she stays after her shift has finished to ensure this.

Joyce doesn't plan on slowing down anytime soon.

The 79-year-old said: "I'd probably be doing it with my zimmer.

"I am very fortunate, I'll be 80 next year and I keep very well. I'll do my job until I can't. I wouldn't change it for anything. None of it is a chore.

"When the weather was bad a few weeks ago people said they felt sorry for me.

"But it didn't bother me what so ever. I wouldn't be without it, it's great."
