Birthplace of Irish Olympian Sonny Murphy to go under the hammer in an online auction

The birthplace of an Irish Olympian will go under the hammer in an online auction later this month.

Michael ‘Sonny’ Murphy was a middle-distance runner who collapsed during the men’s 3,000m steeplechase in the 1932 Los Angeles Olympics.

He never quite recovered from the event which took place during a heatwave and died four years later.

The Parish of Kilnaboy in Co Clare holds a commemorative race annually.

The three-bedroom detached site is at Ballycashin, Kilnaboy, Corofin and is listed with an AMV of €70,000.

The bungalow, which carries a commemorative plaque, is set on a long narrow site that includes a roadside stone shed and extends to 80sq m and is located just off the R476 and fronts on to the L5260 Road.

The house is one of a number of properties up for online auction on Thursday, August 27.
