Birthday party for girl, 13, turns into 'irresponsible all night acid techno rave'

A child's birthday party on a Yorkshire travellers' site got "out of  control" and turned into an all-night techno rave that could be heard for five miles.

The leader of Ryedale District Council has condemned the "extremely irresponsible" people behind the party on Tara Park in North Yorkshire, that took place despite the current pandemic.

It kept residents awake all night on Saturday, August 22, and Sunday, August 23, and could be heard in Malton and Norton, with 20 complaints made to police.

One of the organisers of the party has since shared videos on social media showing a marquee set up on the site with a large sound system for the 13-year-old's birthday.

Videos show children dancing in the marquee at the start of the night before it thins out and there are just a handful of adults playing "Acid Techno" music until the sun comes up.

Ryedale District Council says it is now working with partners, including North Yorkshire Police, who attended the site on Sunday and issued a dispersal order after those involved "refused" to follow  advice from officers.

A team of council officers visited Tara Park yesterday to investigate what happened. They are also investigating reports of fly-tipping nearby.

Yorkshire Live has approached the organiser of the party for a comment.

Councillor Keane Duncan, leader of Ryedale District Council, said: "This was, in effect, a rave involving 10 to 20 people near Tara Park.

"It was a 13-year-old's birthday that has gotten out of control.

"We are talking about music blasting so loud it caused major disturbance to thousands of residents within a five mile radius of Malton.

"Many were left unable to sleep on Saturday night and it then started again on Sunday afternoon.

"Police had turned up and given advice but it was not followed. In the end, police had to issue a dispersal order after warnings were ignored.

"As a council we take this very seriously. Officers are working with police to ensure this doesn’t happen again and that those responsible are dealt with.

"As well as the noise, the team are also investigating some shocking flytipping nearby."

Cllr Duncan added: “This gathering and noise disturbance should be rightly condemned at any time for disturbing the peace. But for this to happen in the middle of the global coronavirus pandemic is
extremely irresponsible.

"It's just unacceptable. Under these circumstances it has put many more people at risk of harm than just those present.”

Cllr Duncan explained Tara Park is a formal site for travellers to park caravans and that there are other families on the site who were not part of the disturbance.

The organiser of the party who posted the videos has been contacted for comment but did not respond.
