Birth of baby Blue is red-letter day for England's reindeer

Unsurprisingly, its dad is called Rudolph and its mum Prancer. But this baby reindeer has been given the unfestive name of Blue – after the bluebells his new home is renowned for.

Staff at the Trevarno estate, near Helston in Cornwall, are celebrating what they claim is the first reindeer born in the far south-west of England for thousands of years.

Blue, a male, is a brand new member of a small herd imported from Scandinavia and in effect left to roam free on the estate.

He was born on 1 May and was quickly joined by a second calf. Two more are expected this month, bringing the total number of reindeer at Trevarno to 14.

The estate's reindeer expert, Ellie Pearce, said: "It was incredibly exciting waiting for the first birth. I arrived in one morning and there he was looking absolutely beautiful.

"Since then he's put on a pound a day and he's become incredibly friendly and inquisitive. He doesn't tend to stray far from his mother as she is very protective."

The new arrival, which currently stands at little over 1ft tall, is being held with his mother in a pen but will soon be introduced to the rest of the herd.

"We're obviously delighted," said Trevarno's general manager, Richard Cox. "He really is a gorgeous little fellow and everyone here has fallen in love with him."

Reindeer have not been indigenous to England for at least 2,000 years according to experts, but some say that figure could be nearer 10,000. Wild herds of them were known in Scotland up to the 13th century, until they were hunted to extinction.
