Birmingham publisher owes £343,000

The company that launched the Birmingham Press, the newspaper that opened in April and closed in October, owed £343,186 by the time the title ceased publication.

That included a sum of £145,000 invested as a loan by its founder and director Chris Bullivant.

Liquidators Begbies Traynor have written to 38 creditors, including several journalists, detailing the money owed by Bullivant and CJB Media, the company he founded to launch the title.

North Wales Newspapers is owed £107,362.88, believed to be in respect of a printing contract.

Journalists are owed £37,000 in total. Some who did freelance work are owed thousands. One of them, Rosalind Dodd, is owed £8,900.

And Dave Ismay, a former Aston Villa executive who wrote a weekly sports diary column, is owed £4,465.

The Birmingham Press and its sister title, the Birmingham Free Press, closed last month after Bullivant announced that he could not compete with advertising rates offered by rival newspapers published by Trinity Mirror.
