Birmingham City manager delivers update on Manchester United's Tahith Chong

Lee Bowyer has revealed Tahith Chong will begin training with Birmingham City on Monday after sealing a loan move from Manchester United earlier this month.

Chong initially remained with United to take part in pre-season preparations, but he was not involved in United's second friendly game against Queens Park Rangers on Saturday afternoon.

Now the Blues manager has revealed the United loanee has joined up with the Birmingham City squad ahead of the 2021/22 Championship campaign.

“He was there this morning, a bit of work at the training ground, now he will start being involved on Monday training with everyone,” Bowyer said.

“He is a player I am looking forward to working with, he should fit in straight away.

“Good players can play in a lot of positions, and he is one of them, he can play wide, he can play as a ten, maybe even as an eight, if we play a diamond he could play on the side of a diamond, he is very good player. Just give him the ball, and he is going to make things happen – I think, and I hope.”

Chong joined the Manchester United Academy from Feyenoord as a highly-rated 16-year-old in 2016, making 16 senior appearances since then.

He made his debut under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, before going out on loan in Belgium and Germany with little success.

The Dutch youth international will be hoping to overturn his fortunes at Birmingham City in the second tier next season.

At 21 years of age, the upcoming campaign will be a make-or-break one for the attacking midfielder.

With competition fierce on the flanks at United, Chong is unlikely to make a breakthrough, but a solid season in the division below could help him move up the pecking order in future.

Chong could play a part in Birmingham's first game of the season, when they face Sheffield United on 7 August.
