Birmingham City discover EFL points deduction fate in news that could boost Bristol City and Aston Villa's play-off hopes

Birmingham City are set to be handed a nine-point deduction after they were accused of breaching EFL financial fair play regulations, according to TalkSPORT.

A hearing took place on Monday in regards to Birmingham City’s spending after the sacking of Gary Rowett in December 2016.

Birmingham were alleged to have exceeded their limits on spending over a three-year period, with losses at around £39m.

Significant spending under the likes of Gianfranco Zola and Harry Redknapp is coming back to haunt Birmingham, with a nine-point deduction said to have been handed down by the EFL.

It had been previously reported that Birmingham could be handed a 12-point deduction but that doesn’t seem to be coming to fruition.

Instead, the deduction of nine points will reportedly be applied now and would take Birmingham down from 13th to 18th in the Championship table. That would put the club just five points above the relegation zone with eight matches remaining.

It is news that will come as a boost to Bristol City in what is proving to be a tightly-contested battle for the Championship play-offs.

Birmingham's recent form has dropped off a little but, with Garry Monk's side currently sat seven points off the top six, they still harboured a faint hope of making the play-offs.

However, a points deduction would rule the Blues out of the play-off race, and mean the Robins have one less team to worry about beating them to the top six.
