Birmingham City close in on Newcastle United target as Brentford eye up Kristoffer Ajer

Birmingham City are closing in on Dion Sanderson, the young Wolves defender who had caught the eye of Newcastle United.

The centre-back spent last season on loan at Sunderland and was wanted back on Wearside with Newcastle and other top-flight clubs also interested but it is Birmingham who have seemingly won the race for him.

Blues boss Lee Bowyer told the BBC: "We are hoping that that will get done soon.

"Something has been agreed but he's just coming back from injury so we are making sure everything is right on the medical side.

"I don’t think there are any problems, it’s just a matter of time.

"It's another good addition to the squad."

Reports claim that Wolves had knocked back cash bids for the defender, including one from Newcastle.

However, the 21-year-old will sign a new deal before heading off to St Andrew's' for the 2020-21 campaign.

With the Magpies' reported budget of just £10m - the summer transfer window may struggle to excite Toon fans.

Joe Willock remains a priority but any return to St James' Park is likely to be on loan with Ashley tightening the purse strings as the takeover saga continues to rage on.

Meanwhile, Kristoffer Ajer looks set for a move to newly-promoted Brentford with a price tag of £13.5m mooted.

There had been confidence that Ajer was to be Newcastle's first signing as reported in a national newspaper last month but Celtic priced the Magpies out of the deal.
