Birmingham Apprenticeship Awards 2020 - Focus on Property and Manufacturing categories

The Birmingham Apprenticeship Awards 2020 will celebrate achievement among individuals, their employers and education and training providers.

This year's event is run in partnership with Ladder for Greater Birmingham, a campaign which is working to create hundreds of new apprenticeships across the region.

The awards in July will celebrate achievement across 12 separate categories including crowning our overall Apprentice of the Year.

Here, we focus on two of the six individual categories which will be presented on the night.

Outstanding Apprentice of the Year (Construction and Property Industries)

The construction industry is vibrant in the region at the moment, from major infrastructure projects like HS2 to new office blocks and hotels. Applications are invited from all fields, whether training to be a brick layer or project manager, and we encourage applicants from supporting sectors such as chartered surveying to estate agencies.

Last year's winner in this category was Victoria Smith frrom property consultancy Cushman and Wakefield. She joined the firm's business rates team as an apprentice surveyor in 2017 and studied for a degree apprenticeship alongside on-the-job training. She has also taken part in the UrbanPlan scheme, represented Cushman & Wakefield at careers initiative Property Needs You and led a debate on the future of high streets in the firm's London office.

Outstanding Apprentice of the Year (Engineering and Manufacturing)

Manufacturing and engineering are considered the lifeblood of the West Midlands economy with so many major employers having bases here. Applicants could be working for a motor manufacturer, part of the supply chain or training alongside engineers on the next big infrastructure project. Applications are encouraged from all fields, from SMEs to large corporations.

Last year's winner in this category was Ritik Sharma from manufacturer Hydraforce Hydraulics. Ritik studied for a mechanical engineering apprenticeship and was involved in developing new test rig stations for production use and other aspects of the project's lifecycle including designing, purchasing, commissioning and modification of rigs. He was also a Young Apprentice Ambassador for the West Midlands and has attended and participated in promotional apprenticeship events at Parliament and in Birmingham.

- Outstanding Apprentice of the Year (Professional Services)
