Birmingham 2022 to stage more women’s medal events than men’s as new sports confirmed for Commonwealth Games

The Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games is set to be the first major multi-sport event to feature more women’s medal events than men's.

The Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) confirmed on Tuesday that Women’s T20 Cricket, beach volleyball and Para-table tennis will be added to the medal events for the 2022 Commonwealth games.

The full and confirmed programme will be announced in 2020, but as things stand, there will be 135 women’s medal events, 133 men’s medal events and seven mixed events.

Birmingham 2022 will also feature the largest Para-sport programme to date.

CGF president Dame Louise Martin said: "We are passionate advocates of women's sport and Para-sport so I am thrilled we are able to make this special announcement.”

While the aforementioned three sports received enough support from the Games associations, archery and shooting did not.
