Birkenhead Tunnel closed every night for days

The Birkenhead Tunnel is closed every night this week for maintenance work.

Merseytravel said the Queensway Tunnel will be shut to drivers from each night from 8pm and will reopen at 6.30am the next morning. Work began on Sunday, December 4 and will finish on Saturday, December 10.

The tunnel is closed so workers can undertake "essential maintenance work". During the closure of the Birkenhead Tunnel, the Kingsway Tunnel will remain fully open in both directions.

The timings of the closure for each day, is as follows:

  • From 9pm on Sunday, December 4 until 6.30am on Monday, December 5;
  • From 8pm on Monday, December 5 until 6.30am on Tuesday, December 6;
  • From 8pm on Tuesday, December 6 until 6.30am on Wednesday, December 7;
  • From 8pm on Wednesday, December 7 until 6.30am on Thursday, December 8;
  • From 8pm on Thursday, December 8 until 6.30am on Friday, December 9;
  • From 8pm on Friday, December 9 until 6.30am on Saturday, December 10.
