Birkenhead tunnel closed after 'police incident'

The Birkenhead tunnel is closed from Liverpool to Wirral after a 'police incident'.

Police have closed two lanes of the Queensway Tunnel between Liverpool and Wirral due to a police incident.

The road was closed at 5.34pm, according to emergency services.

A diversion via the Wallasey (Kingsway) tunnel is currently in place.

According to motorists in Liverpool traffic is 'gridlocked'.

Merseyside Police did not have any further information on the incident.

Stagecoach Merseyside has said Birkenhead cross river services will need to temporary use the Wallasey Tunnel due to an incident.

A spokesperson added: "We are hoping the tunnel will be reopen soon."
