Birkenhead site getting new independent market next month

A brand new market and retail hub is coming to Birkenhead in May.

From May 1, an independent market complete with artisan retail space is set to open next to the Woodside Ferry Terminal building.

The new purpose-built space has stunning views of the Liverpool skyline and is set to become the only combined, independent retail and food hub in the UK.

Local, independent retailers will be able to rent space on a flexible basis, allowing them to showcase and sell their products and services.

The market is a joint project by Woodside Area CIC (Community Interest Company), who developed the existing Woodside Ferry Village in 2019, and Independent Wirral, an organisation formed to support local businesses by Wirral Chamber of Commerce.

Work to transform the area is already well underway.

Sharon Stanton, managing director of Woodside Area CIC, said the plans will add even more to the food hall offering at Woodside Ferry Village.

Ms Stanton added: “Our vision has been to create a vibrant space that can be used by quality, independent retailers and makers from across Wirral.

“By working together with Independent Wirral our aim is to develop a thriving retail community here at Woodside and enhance its overall pull as a major visitor attraction for the region.

“We are so excited to be able to offer this fantastic new facility through Independent Wirral, who are all about showcasing the talent we have here on the peninsula.

“By joining forces with Woodside Ferry Village we will create a truly ground-breaking hub offering visitors the opportunity to eat, drink and shop in this world class location.”

The project has been funded through the government’s Town Deal Accelerator Fund and is being supported by Wirral Council and Wirral Chamber of Commerce.

Paula Basnett, chief executive of Wirral Chamber, said: “There are exciting times in the months ahead as we see far reaching plans taking shape in Woodside and further afield.

“We have a very strong community of independent businesses and we want to support their growth and provide great opportunities to maximise the advantage of our unique waterfront location.

“Through creative development plans we will make Woodside a successful hub of activity and community.”

The market will contain 20 purpose built retail chalets designed by Quirky Builders, a local artisan construction company.

The company has set the market up to be covid -safe, with a one-way system in place to ensure social distancing is possible without harming customers’ experiences.
