Birkenhead in line to get £25m pot to transform town

Birkenhead could be revitalised by a £25m programme of investment.

The Wirral town has been invited to bid for the sum as part of the government’s Towns Fund, worth £3.6bn nationwide.

Birkenhead will be bidding alongside 100 other towns for a £25m share of the money, a so-called Town Deal, which can be used to fund a wide variety of projects in areas such as culture, health and education which will benefit the town.

Wirral Council is asking local residents for their views on what the money should be spent on. The consultation is open from today until Friday, December 4 at 5pm.

Birkenhead town centre has experienced a decline in recent years and the council is working on its own regeneration programme which will run alongside the Town Deal.

The council’s plans include a new site for Birkenhead Market and a new residential quarter.

Cllr Anita Leech, chair of Wirral Council’s economy and regeneration committee, said: “The invitation to bid for funds could not have come at a more opportune time as it will help to underpin a wholesale regeneration programme in Birkenhead, led by Wirral Council, working alongside partners including Wirral Growth Company and Peel Land and Property.

“This will contribute to the redevelopment of the town centre, the waterfront and other areas across the borough, securing jobs, providing sustainable, quality housing and improving highways and transport to meet the needs of our local communities."

The Labour councillor was optimistic about what could be achieved with the money.

Cllr Leech added: “The Town Deal Fund offers a tremendous opportunity for us to secure a significant grant, some £25m, which will enable us to initiate major change.

“We would like to encourage people to get involved in the process to have their say on the future of Birkenhead, by going to the HaveYourSay site.”
