Birdwatchers flock to Hampshire village to spot rare Spanish sparrow - big picture

Spanish sparrow attracts crowd of birdwatchers in Calshot near Southampton
There have been seven sightings of the bird in the UK since 1966 and it was last spotted in 2000. Claire Milgate-Whitcher has been overwhelmed with visitors since spotting the bird in her garden. "Police have had to put up cordons and we've had to help arrange parking. We've even had to warn the local army base – in case they become suspicious of so many people wandering around with cameras." She said as many as 2,000 people are expected to descend on Calshot by the weekend. Photograph: Chris Ison/PA Illustration: Chris Ison/PA
