
A Japanese crane chick rests on the back of an adult bird beside Lake Furen in Nemuro, Hokkaido, on Saturday. Cranes from the nearby village of Tsurui and other major feeding grounds in the area migrate to the lake to breed between spring and autumn. Crane chicks grow up to about 30 centimeters tall around this time of the year. They can be seen following in the steps of their parents, who feed them crabs and small fish from their beaks. The sight of chicks snuggling on their parents' backs is a treasured spectacle among twitchers.
