
An usho fisherman directs cormorants to catch ayu sweetfish under the light of a bonfire in Gifu's Nagaragawa river on Saturday, the first day of the season for the summer spectacle. About 1,000 spectators on boats applauded as six fishermen in traditional costumes demonstrated the technique, which is said to have begun more than 1,300 years ago. The event will run through Oct. 15.
