Bird site being rebuilt after burning down receives major boost in bid to reopen

An island bird observatory being rebuilt after burning down has received a major boost in a bid to reopen it.

A critical milestone has been reached in the £7.4million construction project on Fair Isle.

The first module to replace the fire-damaged observatory has arrived by barge from England.

A bird observatory was first established on Fair Isle in 1948, with the previous building being completed in 2011.

But a devastating fire in 2019 destroyed the facility.

The new observatory will be vital for the small island’s economy as the facility will offer 29 guest rooms for staff and visitors, more than half the island’s population of 50, and is expected to open next year.
