Biotech firm's test for HIV patients makes world approval list

Scottish life sciences company Omega Diagnostics has been boosted by the inclusion of its test aimed at HIV sufferers on a global procurement list.

The Alva-based company, which specialises in tests for allergy, food intolerance and infectious diseases, said its Visitect CD4 Advanced Disease test will be included on The Global Fund procurement list.

This means that the tests could be procured by organisations with access to the fund, an international financing and partnership organisation that aims to help tackle key epidemics.

The move follows approval by the Expert Review Panel, a group of independent experts who review the potential risks and benefits associated with pharmaceutical products.

Omega chief executive Colin King said: "We look forward to providing a unique test to organisations which can help improve the health outcomes of many people living with HIV."

In August Omega  received its first purchase order for the test with an £80,000 deal 20,000 units from its partner company in Zimbabwe.

Last week Omega also secured a second order from its Chinese partner for 28,000 of its Food Detective test kits.

The £400,000 deal follows a previous order form the same partner for 20,000 last month. The latest consignment is expected to be delivered by early November and Omega's Chinese partner plans to commercialise early in 2020.
