Biographer Reveals Melania Trump's Strategic Absences From Events When Natalie Harp Is Around Her Husband

Melania Trump reportedly avoided appearances with Donald Trump when aide Natalie Harp was present, according to biographer Michael Wolff (Credit: @flotus / Instagram)

Melania Trump reportedly had one very specific condition for appearing beside Donald Trump: Natalie Harp could not be there. According to Trump biographer Michael Wolff, the First Lady's carefully managed appearances with her husband were affected by the 35-year-old aide's near constant presence, with Melania allegedly choosing not to attend when Harp was around.

Melania Reportedly Avoiding Appearances

The explosive claim comes from Wolff, who wrote that Melania's appearances alongside Trump were traditionally carefully negotiated and choreographed.

According to his account, the arrangement became difficult when Harp was involved.

'Melania, whose appearances with her husband were carefully negotiated and choreographed, would not show up if Harp was around,' Wolff wrote in a post on his Substack newsletter.

He added that because Harp was seemingly always nearby, Melania was rarely seen alongside her husband during the 2024 presidential campaign, appearing with him mainly during the final week.

The allegation offers one explanation for a pattern that has attracted attention for months. A Daily Beast analysis found that Melania was seen publicly 47 times during 2025 after Trump's 20 January inauguration and only 38 days during the first seven months of 2026.

Natalie Harp Has Become a Constant Presence Around Trump

According to Wolff's reporting, the aide has become one of the people closest to the president, staying near him during meetings, helping with his social media and reportedly bringing him selected news stories using a portable printer.

Her closeness has previously been discussed in books and reporting about Trump's inner circle. Maggie Haberman and Jonathan Swan's Regime Change reportedly described personal notes Harp left for Trump, including one that said, 'You are all that matters to me.'

Wolff has gone further, describing Harp as someone who effectively became a gatekeeper around Trump. He has claimed that staff members, family and even Melania had difficulty getting between the president and his aide.

A White House Power Struggle

Wolff has described Melania and Harp as being caught in a 'secret power struggle', arguing that Harp's central position in Trump's life helps explain why the First Lady has remained so distant from many of his political activities.

The biographer has also claimed that Harp's relationship with Trump is viewed inside his circle as deeply devoted rather than sexual. One aide reportedly described it as a 'Christian devotional relationship', while Wolff characterised Harp as believing she had a higher purpose involving Trump.

It also comes as Democratic Senator Jon Ossoff has publicly attacked Trump's dependence on aides who, he argues, reinforce his worldview rather than challenge him.

Trump Faces Fresh Questions Over His Inner Circle

Ossoff directly referenced Harp while criticising Trump's leadership, arguing that the president had surrounded himself with aides who functioned as 'security blankets'.

Ossoff was quoted saying, 'They have treated the lives of our service members as pawns in a geopolitical game in which they are in way over their head.'

He later explained why he had mentioned Harp, saying Trump had retreated into a bubble of West Wing aides who reassured him that he was doing a great job.

If Wolff's account is accurate, the First Lady's absence was not merely a matter of scheduling or protocol. It was reportedly a deliberate decision to avoid sharing the stage with an aide whose influence over Trump had become impossible to ignore.
