A Scottish Borders-based company is expecting to quadruple its annual turnover in 2021 after a surge in sales due to the pandemic - and has made several new hires to continue this growth trajectory.
Aqualution Systems, based in Duns, manufactures hypochlorous acid - one of the most effective disinfectants against bacteria and viruses, including Covid-19, while being non-toxic and requiring no PPE to administer.
The company expects to generate around £4m in sales on an annualised basis. Its revenues doubled during 2020 and are on track to quadruple in 2021.
The acid is sold directly to businesses and through distributors. It is widely used for infection control in healthcare - and by companies including Network Rail and First Bus - with work underway on its third project with the NHS.
Aqualution Systems claims to be the only company to have developed successful processes for manufacturing the biocide which keeps it stable once the bottle is opened, without compromising effectiveness.
The company has hired Lee-Anne Gillie as commercial director. She previously worked as a director at Ecolab and RP Adam, and is also the chair of the Scottish Borders Chamber of Commerce.
Vicki Whetton has joined as marketing director, leaving her role as a director at Genoa Black, and will be responsible for the marketing of Aqualution in the UK and in key new markets including the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia and Europe.
The firm has also hired Nicky Woods as production controller, Allan Hossack as quality and regulatory manager, Samantha Jackson as customer services controller and Emma Cleghorn as a personal assistant.

Aqualution Systems is also the active substance regulatory dossier holder for hypochlorous acid for both the EU and the UK, meaning it has protected intellectual property rights.
