Bingo player 'felt like a punchbag' as she was attacked during a game

A bingo lover was awarded £100 compensation from a man who attacked her during a game at a club in Arnold.

She faced problems while concentrating on the numbers called when Gary Fearon began yelling, city magistrates heard.

"He was shouting for no particular reason. It was annoying her because she was playing bingo," Daniel Pietrkya, prosecuting, told the court.

"He started to swear and became difficult," Then he turned violent.

Mr Pietryka went on: "All of a sudden, there was an unprovoked attack. He started to punch her face using both fists.

"She felt like she was a punchbag because of the blows raining in on her. A lot of people became involved to prevent this."

The woman later complained of "reddening to the neck, discomfort and pain".

When 60-year-old Fearon was questioned, he told police officers "he had medical problems which affect his memory".

Mr Pietryka added: "He said that he could not really remember anything about it."

A £120 fine was ordered from Fearon of Bentwell Avenue, Arnold, who admitted the common assault of a woman in the Liberal Club on West Street in the town.

He must pay £100 compensation to the woman and £32 government tax.

He had never been in trouble before and told the JPs: "Sorry, I don't remember much of it.

"My memory loses very quickly. Apparently I did it so I hold my hand up. I apologise."

Fearon represented himself. As he left court, he said: "Thank you very much."
