Bindi Irwin was rushed to hospital in Las Vegas after suffering a health emergency, just hours before she was due to appear at the annual Steve Irwin Gala to honour her late father.
On Sunday (local time), Bindi and her mother, Terri Irwin, were noticeably absent from the event. The Steve Irwin Gala is a yearly celebration held by the Irwin family and fellow Wildlife Warriors to remember the impact and legacy of Steve. It serves as a major fundraising event for the family’s ongoing conservation and wildlife protection.
While punters were surprised that Bindi and Terri weren’t in attendance, Robert Irwin revealed that Bindi had to be taken to the hospital for emergency surgery after her appendix suddenly ruptured.

Thankfully, in a statement to PEOPLE, the newly minted Dancing With The Stars contestant confirmed that his sister would be just fine.
“She’s going to be OK, but surgery — out of all the things we were ready for, that was not one of them,” Robert admitted.
“She’s just come out the other side of endometriosis and now the appendix goes. Health is so important — it really is.”
According to Robert, Bindi had every intention of going to the event, despite being in a lot of pain.
“She came to Las Vegas and was ready to come to the gala, put on a brave face in a lot of discomfort and a lot of pain and said, ‘Nope, I’m just going to tough it out, I’m going to go for it’. But the surgeon said, ‘No, your appendix is going. That thing’s gotta come out.’ Health has to come first,” Robert shared.
“She’s very sad. She’s devastated that she and Mom can’t be here, but I know she’ll make a speedy recovery.

Unfortunately for Bindi, the appendicitis is just another health setback in a string of medical struggles. For the last few years, the mum-of-one has battled with endometriosis. It’s a personal struggle that has inspired her to speak publicly on the matter and advocate for further research into treatment for women.
“She’s just come out the other side of endometriosis and now the appendix goes,” Robert continued.
“Bindi has become an incredible advocate for women’s health, particularly, and I think it’s really important to prioritise getting help.”
In 2023, Bindi made a powerful post on Instagram to share about her rocky 10-year journey with endometriosis.
“Trying to remain a positive person and hide the pain has been a very long road,” she wrote.
“A doctor told me it was simply something you deal with as a woman, and I gave up entirely, trying to function through the pain. Going in for surgery was scary but I knew I couldn’t live like I was. Every part of my life was getting torn apart because of the pain.”

In the post, she also encouraged women to speak up if they were in pain.
“I’m sharing my story for anyone who reads this and is quietly dealing with pain and no answers,” she wrote.
“Let this be your validation that your pain is real and you deserve help. Keep searching for answers.”
And that, my friends, is just one of many reasons why Bindi and the Irwins are Australia’s unofficial royal family.
