Bin-raiding Emu baffles locals after huge bird caught feasting at bus stop

West Lothian locals were left baffled after a huge Emu was spotted ‘raiding’ a public bin in Livingston.

The creature was caught snooping through the rubbish next to a bus stop in the town yesterday.

The bird, believed to be named Shirley, escaped from a local animal sanctuary according to Twitter users, before going viral on social media.

The image was shared by @Smallgingergirl who snapped the picture then captioned it 'Living in Livingston you get used to seeing some strange things, an ostrich raiding the bin, however, is a new one.'

She later added: “It belongs to a local cattery and is apparently called Shirley.”

The tweet has over 2k likes since being posted yesterday with users left in stitches.

Gavin Hamilton replied: “Sorry - that’s just off the scale for ‘strange things’ what is going on?”

Davy Catchalot said: “Times are hard for Emus these days.”

Bob M said: “It must’ve been fed up waiting for the bus!”

Scrumpy Girl tweeted: “I thought you were joking until I zoomed in. Where the hell did it come from?”

Jambo Tree tweeted: “I think Shirley belongs to Hope Scotland, next to the cattery. Hope she’s okay.”

JEC replied: “This is both bizarre and hilarious, just when I thought life couldn’t get any more weird.”

The SSPCA said: “We were called about this emu yesterday but understand the owner managed to get to it before we attended.”

The Daily Record has contacted Hope Scotland animal sanctuary for comment.
