Bin lorry goes on fire in Perth City Centre

Firefighters were called to a fire on board a bin lorry in Perth early this morning, Wednesday January 6.

A Perth and Kinross Council refuse collection vehicle was ablaze, outside St John’s Kirk, at 8.17am.

Eye witnesses saw smoke and flames pouring from the hatch at the back of the rubbish truck.

Two fire engines came to the stricken bin lorry which was stopped between the main door to St John’s Kirk and scaffolding surrounding Perth City Hall.

Water hoses were used to put out the fiercely burning rubbish.

A spokeswoman for the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service confirmed that two appliances from Perth were sent to the scene.

She said: “We were in attendance. The stop message has since been received.

“No casualties were involved.”

A Perth and Kinross Council spokesperson commented: “We are aware of a fire involving one of our bin lorries this morning and can confirm that thankfully no one was injured. We are investigating the source of the fire."
