Bin lorry fire on M8 as cops close motorway while crews tackle blaze

A bin lorry burst into flames on the M8 leading to traffic delays of up to 95 minutes this afternoon.

Emergency services raced to the scene on the westbound section of the motorway between Junction 5 at Shotts and Junction 6 at Newhouse, to the east of Glasgow.

The blaze broke out shortly before 3.15pm before the road was closed off by cops and traffic quickly tailed back to the Harthill services.

Fire crews and Police Scotland remain on the scene and Traffic Scotland have confirmed significant tailbacks following the incident.

An SFRS spokesperson confirmed: "We received a call at 15.13 to attend the M8 westbound following reports of a vehicle on fire there.

"We mobilised three appliances, two of which remain in attendance.

"Police Scotland are also in attendance."

Both lanes have now reopened but traffic remains heavy in the area.

Traffic Scotland put out a Tweet sayin: "M8westbound is now CLOSED. J5 Shotts to J6 Newhouse due to a vehicle fire. Traffic queuing back to Harthill services"

They later confirmed: "Westbound J5 to J6 now CLEAR - both lanes running. Traffic remains heavy back to J4 Whitburn - delays approx 90 mins, this will ease soon."

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "Around 3.30pm police received a report of a lorry on fire on the M8 between junctions 5 and 6.

"No reports of any injuries and police were in attendance for traffic management."
