Bin lorry catches fire while driving down major road

A bin lorry caught fire as it was driving down a major Merseyside road today causing travel chaos.

Waste collected by the lorry is believed to have burst into flames on the Coastal Road, between the Formby Bypass and Pinfold Lane, just before 11am.null

Fire crews at the scene advised the driver to empty the contents onto the road so they could then put them out using hose reel jets.

Pictures show smoke coming from the centre of a mountain of rubbish in the middle of the road.

Merseyside Police have closed the road and are currently at the junction managing traffic.

A spokesman for Merseyside Fire and Rescue said: "We arrived at the scene at 10.56am.

"A JCB digger has also arrived to reload the items onto the wagon once it is safe to do so, or another wagon may have to be sent out."

The incident is ongoing and delays are to be expected.

Sefton Council has been approached for comment.
