A bin lorry burst into flames in Perth city centre, sparking an investigation.

The vehicle went up in flames at around 8.17am on Wednesday at Kirkgate.

The fire broke out as the lorry was out on a collection run (Perth and Kinross Council)

Two fire crews raced to the scene to put out the blaze.

Shocking images, shared by Perth and Kinross Council, show huge flames billowing out of the back of the lorry.

Plumes of smoke filled the air ahead of the morning rush hour.

Nobody was injured as a result of the fire.

Fuming Perth and Kinross Council chiefs warned locals about what to not dispose of in rubbish bins and the dangers these items can cause.

A formal investigation has been launched into the incident.

A council spokesperson said on Thursday: "The Council is still investigating the cause of the fire, and whilst there were no injuries and only limited damage to the vehicle this was a potentially serious incident.

"Therefore the Council would like to remind residents and businesses to please make sure they do not put anything in their bins that could be dangerous.

"Items that should never be placed in a kerbside bins include: batteries; hot ashes or ashtrays and gas canisters.

"Batteries should be removed and recycled.

"Ashes and ashtrays should be left to fully cool before placing in a bin.

"Gas canisters should be disposed of in line with the instructions on the cylinder.

"If there are no instructions, we recommend you contact the manufacturer or a local specialist waste company.

"The Council would like to thank the Fire Service for its assistance, and residents and businesses for their on-going compliance with the guidelines."

Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) confirmed their attendance at the fire and assured that the area was left in a safe condition.

A SFRS spokeswoman told the Record: "We were alerted at 8.17am on Wednesday, January 6 to reports of a fire affecting a bin lorry at Kirkgate, Perth.

"Operations Control mobilised two appliances to the scene to extinguish the fire.

"There were no reported casualties.

"Firefighters left after making the area safe."
