Bin fire outside Notts library which 'could have spread to the building' believed to be arson

Firefighters dealt with a bin fire outside a Nottinghamshire library which officials said 'could have spread to the building if it wasn't for the quick actions of the public'.

A crew from Stapleford was called to the scene of a wheelie bin fire outside a library in Stapleford Lane, Toton, at 9am on Friday morning, May 31.

One hose reel was used to extinguish the fire which is believed to have been set deliberately.

Firefighters had dealt with the incident by 9.38am, advising staff at the library to move the bins away from the library and to get them padlocked to help prevent further incidents of this nature.

A fire service spokesman said: "The bin had been pushed up close to the property, which could have spread to the building if it wasn’t for the quick actions of the public and our team."

He said over the last few months wheelie bins had been set alight which are believed to have been deliberate.

Police said they were made aware of the bin fire on Friday morning at 9.20am by the fire service.

Officers were not required to attend.

Anyone with information which may help the investigation is asked to call the force on 101, quoting incident 172 of May 31.
