Bin collections hit as council issues urgent Storm Franklin advice

Residents in Liverpool are being urged to stay safe as the bad weather continues today - with a number of services likely to be disrupted in the city.

Following the problems caused by Storm Eunice at the back end of last week, the city and region is preparing for the impact of Storm Franklin - with strong winds already battering some areas.

Liverpool Council said it is expecting these strong winds to continue until late this afternoon, with the potential for fallen trees and blocked roads across the city.

The bad weather is likely to disrupt services too.

Liverpool residents are being advised to put their refuse bins out for collection as normal, but warned the weather may mean they are not collected today.

If your bin is not collected, you are advised to leave it out as it will be collected by crews tomorrow.

All mobile testing units for people with Covid-19 symptoms and Rapid Response Vehicles for those without symptoms have been cancelled for Monday.

What to do in an emergency

Trees - The council says that if a tree looks dangerous, has fallen and is blocking a road or pavement, please call 0151 233 3001 between 8am and 6pm on weekdays (outside these hours please call 999).

Power cuts - The city council asks people to please dial 105 in the case of a power cut

Unsafe buildings - You can report an unsafe building at https://liverpool.gov.uk/planning-and-building-control/building-control/report-a-dangerous-structure/ or call 999 in an emergency

Key advice for residents

Liverpool Council has also put together the following advice for residents for how to act before, during and after the storm.

Ahead of the storm

  • Secure loose objects such as ladders, garden furniture, trampolines or anything else that could be blown into windows and other glazing and break them
  • Keep your wheelie bin secure
  • Close and securely fasten doors and windows, particularly those on the windward side of the house, and especially large doors such as those on garages
  • Park vehicles in a garage, if available; otherwise keep them clear of buildings, trees, walls and fences

During the storm

  • Stay indoors as much as possible
  • If you do go out, try not to walk or shelter close to buildings and trees
  • Do not go outside to repair damage while the storm is in progress
  • Take care when driving on exposed routes such as bridges, or high open roads, delay your journey or find alternative routes if possible
  • Do not drive unless your journey is really necessary

After the storm

  • Be careful not to touch any electrical/telephone cables that have been blown down or are still hanging
  • Do not walk too close to walls, buildings and trees as they could have been weakened
  • Make sure that any vulnerable neighbours or relatives are safe and help them make arrangements for any repairs
