Bin collections delayed after huge fire sends plumes of smoke across Merseyside

Delays to bin collections are expected in one part of our region after a huge fire at a tip yesterday.

The fire at Bidston Recycling Centre in Wirral, which crews were alerted to at 5.55pm last night, sent large plumes of smoke across the area.

Dramatic footage captured the immense scale of the blaze, which saw 10 fire engines called out to the tip.

Wirral Council said the disruption caused by the fire is delaying its bin collections.

A post on the local authority’s Facebook page, read: “Unfortunately, due to a fire at Bidston tip yesterday, general waste, recycling and garden waste collections are subject to delays as well as our ERIC’s [bulky item] collection.

“Please bear with us, teams are working hard to carry on with collections. Leave your bin out by 7am on it’s usual day until it is collected.

“Bidston tip remains closed at the moment. We appreciate your patience and we will update with more information soon.”

Recalling the frightening scenes last night, Jonny Benson, who saw the fire on his way home from work, said: "There were two or three security guards in the road diverting traffic, I asked one if everything was OK to which she replied 'the tip's on fire!'

“I managed to walk a bit closer via the millennium trail cycle path which stretches up alongside the exit.

“It was clear from there that the fire seemed to be coming from the main unloading bay area under the main metal roof. I didn't want to get much closer as I started to guess what could go up next."
