Billy Sheehan in line to be new Laois football manager

Billy Sheehan is poised to become the next manager of the Laois footballers.

Like Mike Quirke before him, Sheehan hails from Kerry but he played intercounty football for Laois for a decade.

It is understood that a selection committee charged with finding a successor to Quirke, who stepped down in early July, has put Sheehan's name forward for ratification by the Laois county board on Monday week.

Sheehan previously has experience of coaching in a senior inter-county set-up, having worked in Peadar Healy's Cork backroom team in 2016-17, and also coached with Offaly a year later.

He has also coached with UCD, where he also played, and with Laois Ladies and Ballyroan-Abbey. Most recently he worked with Palatine, who got to the Carlow county final.

As a club footballer, Sheehan won titles in Cork, Kerry, Dublin and Laois - and, as recently as last year, played for Cratloe in the Clare county final.

The Tralee native transferred to Emo in 2004 and was subsequently picked by Mick O'Dwyer during his time in charge of the midlanders. He played for the county up to six years ago.

If Sheehan does take charge he will inherit a Laois side that failed to win in the League and championship this year and that has dropped into Division 3.
