Billy Sharp explains how Leeds United are motivating him to stay in the Premier League

Billy Sharp says the prospect of facing Leeds United in a sold-out Yorkshire derby is one of his motivations behind trying to keep Sheffield United up this season.

September's game between Leeds and Sheffield United was the first Premier League meeting between the two sides in over 26 years but was played behind closed doors due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The return fixture at Elland Road is set to be played in early April but, with England still currently in lockdown, it seems highly unlikely that fans will be allowed to attend the contest in any great numbers, even if any are able to at all.

It means fans have been forced to wait to see one of both sides' most anticipated games back in the Premier League in person.

With the Blades currently sat bottom of the table, there is no guarantee that the fixture will go ahead next season, but Sharp is keen to make it happen.

The former Whites striker was delighted to see his old team get promoted back to the Premier League last season and says their form this year is reminiscent of Sheffield United's last year.

"I wanted them to get promoted. I've got a good friend in Liam Cooper there. He's the captain and doing great at the minute," Sharp told the Super 6 podcast.

"He was one who signed on the same day as when I signed for Leeds. It's only him and Kalvin Phillips I think who are left from when I was there.

"A lot has changed and for the better obviously. It's good to see them doing well. It's reminding me a lot of what we did last season.

"They're playing with a lot of belief, momentum and it's a credit to them boys because they haven't changed much - I think they've only made two or three signings.

"Hopefully we can keep grinding out the results and stay in the league so we can play against Leeds with a full house at Bramall Lane or at Elland Road."
