Billy McNeill honoured in song by Celtic legend Bertie Auld as Lisbon Lion pays poignant tribute

Lisbon Lion Bertie Auld honoured Billy McNeill in song outside Celtic Park during an emotional tribute to his iconic team-mate.

McNeill passed away aged 79 on Monday night following a long battle with dementia to plunge Scottish football into mourning.

The legendary Celtic defender, known as Cesar, was one of the Parkhead club's greatest ever servants, having captained the side before later taking over as manager.

Auld and fellow Lisbon hero John Clark laid wreaths at the statue erected in McNeill's honour on the Celtic Way as a large crowd turned out to pay their respects.

And Auld led supporters in a rendition of The Celtic Song in a poignant tribute to his friend with whom he won the European Cup in 1967.

The 81-year-old also chatted with members of the McNeill family who had gathered to mourn.

Auld had earlier spoken of the towering defender's influence on a legendary Celtic side.

He told talkSPORT: “Billy was a born leader. I met him when he was just turned 17 and Jock Stein signed him for Celtic.

Billy McNeill news leaves former Celtic striker Charlie Nicholas in tears as he recalls special memory

“Even at that particular time he had that presence about him.

“He was six foot two and I’m only five foot eight so I had to look up to him! But the great thing was he was always pleasant and yet on the park you could see immediately he was a true professional.

“He had everything in his locker - height, build, attitude and Jock made him captain at a very young age because he was a leader.

“All 12 players in that team looked up to Billy.

“I promise you, that group of players, Billy always respected the players, when it came to big Jock and Celtic Football Club he was always up and fighting our corner.

“He was there if we needed something and he would have the boss in and have a wee chat with him.

“That was the type of guy Billy was. He didn’t like anything to linger. He was always there for you.”

McNeill's passing has sparked a huge outpouring of grief from across the football world with clubs, players, fans and managers all sharing fond memories of Celtic's greatest ever captain.

Neil Lennon , Sir Alex Ferguson and Rangers legend John Greig have all told of their admiration and respect for McNeill after his death was announced early on Tuesday morning.
