The leader of Jock Stein's famed Lisbon Lions, he became the first British player to ever hoist aloft the "trophy with the big ears" after the Hoops' victory over Inter Milan in May 1967.

A hero to supporters, he was adored by the club and his statue outside the ground has become a shrine for the star in recent days.

As reported on Glasgow Live, his death was announced in a statement released by his wife Liz and their five children on Tuesday.

The man known as Cesar passed away, aged 79, after a long battle with dementia.

Hail Cesar - a tribute to Celtic's greatest ever captain Billy McNeill

Celtic announced plans to honour him, starting with a day of remembrance against Kilmarnock on Saturday.

Current stars will lay a wreath on the Celtic Way at 11.00am and there will be special video tributes before the game and a minute's applause.

A statement from his family reads : "We do not believe football stadiums were ever built to be to be silent. Our father would not have wanted that. They should be places of noise, passion and enjoyment.

"Football was his life and Celtic Park was a very large part of that. So please celebrate his life with a moment of cheers, songs and applause because that would make him feel at home again.”
