Billy McNeill dead - Celtic legend passes away after long battle with dementia

Scotland has lost a legend.

Celtic legend Billy McNeill has died at the age of 79. after a long battle with dementia.

The news, confirmed by the club this morning, comes two years after his family made public his fight against the condition.

Gap in life expectancy across Renfrewshire communities is 'staggering'

McNeill is the latest Lisbon Lion to have passed following the death of Tommy Gemmell in March 2017.

A permanent tribute was erected in his honour at Celtic Park in 2015 .

He may no longer walk the corridors of Celtic Park but he will always watch over the stadium he called home.

Thought by many fans to be Celtic’s greatest captain, he was a towering centre-half who played with steel and style.

The man labelled Cesar was made immortal when the club unveiled a bronze statue of him in December 2015 - so his memory will live on at Celtic Park.
