Billy McDowell: Body found in search for missing man with a 'heart of gold'

Police in West Lothian have confirmed that a body has been found in the search for Billy McDowell.

Officers have stated that the body was found in "non suspicious" circumstances near Whitburn on Sunday October 18.

A formal identification is still yet to take place, however the family of Billy McDowell, 58, have now been informed of the discovery.

Billy's family have been searching for him since August 2, when he disappeared after visiting a series of shops in West Lothian.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “The family of local man Billy McDowell, missing since Sunday, August 2, have been made aware of the discovery.

“Formal identification is yet to take place and a post mortem examination will be carried out in due course to establish the exact cause of death.

“The death is not being treated as suspicious.”

In September, Edinburgh Live spoke to Billy's brother, Robert, 47, who described him as having a "heart of gold".

"He is such a happy-go-lucky guy, he could always make you laugh or smile and is a bit of a practical joker", said Robert.

Since his disappearance, the family have continued to look for Billy in an investigation that has seen police carry out a host of different searches in the area.

Speaking last month, Robert shared the heartbreaking toll the ordeal has had on their family.

He said: "It's been very traumatic, daily life just doesn't go on as normal when something like this happens, we can't do anything without thinking about him and knowing he's not there."
