Billy Gilmour 'wanted' for Rangers return as Steven Gerrard eyes loan return for Chelsea youngster

Rangers want to take Billy Gilmour on loan in January, according to a report.

The former Ibrox youth star made his first Champions League start for Chelsea on Tuesday night and was named man of the match in the draw with Russian side Krasnodar.

It was only his second start of the season after injury and Chelsea are considering sending him out on a temporary deal during the winter window.

And the Scottish Sun say Rangers want to bring him back to Glasgow on a six-month loan deal for the second half of the season and have made an approach to get him.

It means Steven Gerrard would have another midfield option to add to the six he already uses for Rangers this season.

The likes of Steven Davis and Scott Arfield need their workloads managed as they get on in their career while Ryan Jack has struggled with injuries at times this season.

Gilmour is believed to be looking for regular first team football in a bid to break into Steve Clarke's Euro 2020 squad.

But Frank Lampard has mixed feelings over potentially sending him out on loan, and said: I’m not sure about a loan. The way Billy trains and plays I can see him with us.

“So  I have to make sure the pathway is right. We have to think about what’s best.”
