Billy Gilmour transfer decision made as Norwich City 'close' to Chelsea deal

Norwich City have reportedly moved into pole position to sign Chelsea's Billy Gilmour on a year-long loan deal this summer.

Gilmour impressed at this summer's Euro 2020 for Scotland before contracting coronavirus, which curtailed his tournament and forced fellow Chelsea teammates Mason Mount and Ben Chilwell into quarantine.

The Scotland international caught the eye in his solitary start against England at the tournament and won the official UEFA Man of the Match award in the 0-0 game.

The performance and his reputation has attracted a plethora of interest in the highly-rated youngster.

According to Pink Un, Norwich City have seen off interest from several Premier League clubs and are close to finalising a deal for Chelsea's young star which would see him move to the Canaries on a temporary basis next season.

Norwich were promoted to the Premier League after just a year in the Championship. Daniel Farke is believed to be a huge admirer of the Scottish international.

Gilmour is currently still self-isolating due to Covid-19, which could delay the deal somewhat.

However, once completed the move would likely suit all parties involved. At 20 years old, Gilmour needs regular game time and he is unlikely to get it at Chelsea.

Norwich will provide him with much better chances of playing regular first-team football in the Premier League, and the newly-promoted side will get an outstanding player in return who has caught the eye in many of his appearances in senior football so far.

He made 11 appearances for Chelsea's first team last season and could prove to be the perfect long-term replacement for N'Golo Kante at Stamford Bridge.

For now Gilmour needs experience and game-time. Daniel Farke has proved during his stint with the Canaries so far that he is not afraid to throw youngsters in at the deep end, which should encourage Chelsea's Scottish midfielder.
