Billy Gilmour starts for Chelsea as midfielder given chance to stake Scotland claim

Chelsea have handed a start to Billy Gilmour against Fulham as he gets the chance to stake his claim for the Scotland squad.

The midfielder hasn't featured much in the Premier League since Thomas Tuchel replaced Frank Lampard at Stamford Bridge.

But Gilmour has been handed the chance to play from the start in the West London derby.

The 19-year-old hasn't been capped by Scotland but with expanded squads for Euro 2020 he could yet force his way in.

Tuchel confirmed on Friday that Gilmour was in his thoughts but refused to say if he would start.

He said: "It is not decided yet.

"N’Golo (Kante) feels very good, Jorgi (Jorginho) looked very good and in training again today the guys are super professional, they know that we miss Kova (Matteo Kovavic) a lot so I have the feeling Jorgi and N’Golo step even up, even if that is not possible I have the impression they step up in doing really everything to recover as fast as possible.

"They looked very good today in training so I was quite impressed. The last decision is made today so in the evening, the afternoon or maybe tomorrow morning but Billy is in the squad, he was very close to playing the last games some minutes so he is in good shape."
