Billy Gilmour Scotland latest as SFA set to take 'cautious stance over Chelsea rising star'

Man of the moment Billy Gilmour is facing an anxious wait ahead of Scotland's squad announcement.

Instead of an instant call up to the senior squad, the Chelsea midfielder will reportedly be named in Scot Gemmill's U-21 squad on Tuesday.

The 18-year-old has shot into the public eye over the past week with two outstanding man of the match displays against Liverpool and Everton.

Steve Clarke made a personal trip to watch Gilmour excel in an FA Cup win over the European champions last Tuesday.

But The Athletic claims the Scotland boss is cautious about fast-tracking the teenager into his squad for the Euro 2020 play off against Israel at Hampden.

It's said the SFA are prioritising Gilmour getting as many minutes on the pitch as possible, which they feel is more likely with the U-21s.

Scotland have a variety of options in centre-midfield, including Scott McTominay, Callum McGregor, John Fleck, Ryan Jack and potentially John McGinn, should he prove his fitness following a long injury lay-off.

Gilmour has played four of five U-21 Euro qualifiers and Gemmill's youngsters face crucial clashes with Croatia and Greece later this month.

After a standout display in Chelsea's 4-0 thumping of Everton on Sunday, Gilmour admitted he'd be thrilled to earn a first-team call-up.

He said: “It’s a bit mad but that would be amazing to get called-up.

“I need to just keep working hard and doing my best and hopefully get that opportunity.”
