Billy Gilmour's first words after Frank Lampard promoted him to the Chelsea first team squad

Billy Gilmour has described it as a "massive moment" for him after being promoted to Chelsea's first team on a permanent basis.

The teenager was told by Blues head coach Frank Lampard that he would be forming part of the senior squad moving forward following the 2-2 draw with Leicester City earlier this month.

Gilmour travelled with the Chelsea squad to the King Power Stadium, but did not feature against the Foxes and was not involved in the matchday squad of 18.

But he has made five appearances for Chelsea's first team so far this season, with his Premier League debut coming in the 2-2 draw with Sheffield United at Stamford Bridge back in August.

Since then, he has featured twice in the Carabao Cup, once more in the Premier League and in the FA Cup tie at Hull City last month.

And now, having been officially moved into the first team squad, the former Rangers midfielder has spoken of his delight and his aims going forward with Lampard's side.

"It's a massive moment for me and I'm really happy," he said, speaking to Chelsea's club website.

"I went with the squad to Leicester and even though I wasn't involved, the gaffer pulled me afterwards to tell me that after the winter break I'd be with the first team permanently.

"It's a dream come true for me. It's the first big step I think, moving into the first team dressing room at a club like Chelsea. It's massive for me.

"Knowing that the manager has such faith in you is massive, it gives me so much confidence when I step onto the field. It's really good knowing that he trusts in you and likes the way you play, and I think that's the same for everyone here.

"Age isn't really an issue here. The gaffer has shown that if you work hard and perform well, then you will get opportunities. Hopefully I can keep pushing on and work hard every day in training."
