Billy Gilmour's Chelsea form key to ex Rangers youth's Scotland chances according to Steve Clarke

Steve Clarke reckons Chelsea star Billy Gilmour will be a "big player" for Scotland in the coming years, but says he needs to make sure he's in Frank Lampard's side first.

The Rangers youth product has impressed in the matches he's played in the English Premier League since breaking in to Frank Lampard's side earlier this year.

He didn't feature in their most recent fixture against Aston Villa, but could play in their clash with Manchester City this evening.

And Scotland boss Clarke says it's his club form which will dictate how heavily he's involved with the national team.

Scotland will play Euro 2020 play-off and Nations League matches this autumn.

And, when talking about Gilmour's chances of featuring in those matches, Clarke told Sky Sports News: “They [Chelsea] haven’t played a lot of games since the shutdown, Billy’s been on the bench for the games that Chelsea have played now.

"Listen, Billy's a big prospect and will be a big player for Scotland in the future.

"Now whether the future is in September, or October or November, or whether it’s a year is going to be decided by Billy’s performances, if he plays, if he gets a chance to play.

“It’s a position where we’re very strong, we have really good midfield players.

“It’s great to have that competition in that position so Billy’s certainly in the mix and he’s going to have a big future in the Scottish game.”
