Scotland wonderkid Billy Gilmour is already at his dream club in Chelsea.
That's according to Stamford Bridge favourite Gus Poyet, who has been in awe of the former Rangers youngster.
The 19-year-old midfielder earned his Premier League debut against Sheffield United last August and has added a further six senior appearances, including a breakout showing in the Blues’ 2-0 win over Liverpool in March.
His performances have justified Chelsea’s decision to raid Ibrox for the precocious playmaker in 2017.
And Poyet believes Gilmour has the perfect platform to progress thanks to his array of ‘spectacular’ teammates and the midfield pedigree in the dugout.
Poyet lauded: “Billy Gilmour has got people in front of him that he can learn from.
“There are spectacular midfielders at Chelsea, people who have played at the highest level - players who have won the World Cup in [N’Golo] Kante and players who have played for Real Madrid in [Mateo] Kovacic.
“There are plenty of things he can learn.
“On top of that he’s got a manager [Lampard] who was an outstanding midfielder but also an assistant manager who played in exactly the same position in Jody Morris.
“It’s like the dream club for Gilmour right now, because if he really looks around and pays attention and listens - which is what I see him doing - he has the ability to go far.”
Gilmour was an unused substitute as Chelsea swept Aston Villa aside 2-1 in their first match since the Covid-19 crisis halted football. However, Poyet is adamant the teenager will have a vital part to play as Lampard’s charges seek to secure a Champions League place for next term.
With Manchester City next up at Stamford Bridge on Thursday, Poyet told talkSPORT: “He’s fighting for that place with very good players and it’s not like he NEEDS to be in, because the other ones are very well recognised players.
“But in this period of many games, for sure, he’s going to have a chance.
“Depending on how quickly he gets all that, he’s going to be an important part of the club. I’m looking forward to seeing him play in the next few games.”
