Billy Gilmour returns to Chelsea for ankle injury assessment that could keep Norwich City star out for a month

Billy Gilmour has returned to Chelsea for assessment on an ankle injury which could keep the Scotland international out for a month.

The midfielder is spending the season on loan at Norwich City, but Canaries manager Dean Smith has confirmed that Gilmour is back in London for a few days as the Blues run checks on the problem.

Smith will be without Gilmour for Wednesday’s game at West Ham and may not be able to call on the 20-year-old for a month.

“Gilmour has an ankle injury that puts him out for three to four weeks,” said the Norwich boss.

“He’s gone back to Chelsea for them to assess it and I hope he’ll be back for treatment over the next few days.”

Gilmour has struggled on loan at Norwich this season. The Chelsea academy graduate fell down the pecking order under former boss Daniel Farke and was abused by a minority of his own fanbase after the 3-0 defeat at Crystal Palace, prompting Smith to come to his defence.

The former Aston Villa boss said: “There is no-one I see try more than Billy in wanting to get the ball and wanting to do well.

“He’s very well supported here within the group, the players, and staff. He will just keep working hard to get better.”
