Billy Gilmour pointed in Rangers direction amid career 'crossroads' but Michael Beale handed Brighton transfer caveat

Pundit Mark Wilson reckons Billy Gilmour would consider a move away from Brighton on loan as he fielded questions over a dramatic return to Rangers.

Gilmour left the Ibrox academy for Stamford Bridge as a teenager and looked set to be the next big thing in the English top flight as he made his first-team breakthrough under Frank Lampard. However, a disappointing loan move to Norwich City didn't help kickstart his career last term during their doomed English Premier League survival bid.

He signed with Brighton in the summer from Chelsea after a sales pitch from Graham Potter - before the Seagulls boss made the move to London. Since the arrival of Roberto De Zerbi he has barely had a look-in and has racked up just five appearances this term with his only start coming in the EFL Cup win over Arsenal. That has sparked calls for a return north of the border, following the arrival of Michael Beale in Govan.

A caller into Clyde 1 Superscoreboard claimed that the 21-year-old would be the perfect fit for Beale's new-look Rangers and style of football. When asked if Gilmour was likely to leave Brighton on loan so quickly, Wilson said: “Maybe.

"Listen, he’s someone with exceptional talent who wants to play. He is finding it difficult at the minute and he’s got to find a home that he can play 30, 40, 50 games without long breaks in his career.

“He is at a stage now, but he’s at a crossroads. If there was some sort of miracle that Rangers could entice him up to Scotland, I think he would flourish up here.

“I think he may find it easy to take the ball in tight positions, but the wage he might demand could be out of Rangers reach.”
